Descendants of Wendel Bender (Panther)

Amended 10/22/2001

Generation No. 1

1. WENDEL1 BENDER was born Abt. 1618 in Germany somewhere in the region of Eschelbach. He married MARGARETHA 1637 in Germany. She was born Abt. 1618 in Germany somewhere in the region of Eschelbach.

Notes for WENDEL BENDER:

Wendel and Margretha were born somewhere in the region of Eschelbach Germany, a small village southest of Heidelberg around 1618. This was a small farming village along the Rine River Region of the Palatinate. This region is one of the most scenic sections of the German Republic, and is famous for it's grape and wine production.

The Thirty years War began after a nationalist and Protestant revolt in Bohemia. In the defenestration of Prague, rebels threw regents Jaroslav Von Martinitz and Williams Stawata from the windows of Haradcany Palace. Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded to satisfy Spain after his expedition to find El Dorado failed.

Wendel and Margretha were married 19 years after the begining of The Thirty Years War in the year of 1637. Although we don't know much about their lives, due to the devastation caused by thre war. We do know that in 1653 the Evabgelical Luthern Parish of Eschelbach established a new church register to replace the one that was apparently destroyed during The Thirty Years War.

The births and marriages of the parish members were the first part of the new register. The register showed seven Bender familes in the parish, and we list them here.

The church register showed marriage dates as follows:

Hanns and Margretha 1621

Peter and Anna 1623

Hans and Anna 1632

Anstett and Anna 1634

Wendel and Margretha 1637

Georg and Appolonia 1641

Gerog and Helena 1643

The church register showed Wendel & Margretha's children as nine.

During those turbulent times it seems that Wendel was a farmer, and a blacksmith due to the fact that the whole region was agriculter, and the fact that the trade of blacksmithing seems to have been passed down from generation to generation in our early families. This was the practice regarding family trades, skills and crafts. Little schooling was available for the general populace in those times.

Families and clans were known by their respective trades in early times and the German word Pan'tser as used in the context of metal and mechanical things may have led to the early variations in our name in America. The early settlers recorded names as they sounded

Notes for MICHEL BENDER:

Michel Bender was born on December 1, 1653, the seventh of nine children born to Wendel and Margaretha Bender. In 1653, Ferdinand III was elected Holy Roman Emperor and thw world's first postage stamps were struck on the Billets de Port Paye. They were used by a small postal service in Paris. It was also the year that Connecticut seized Fort Good Hope (Hartford) from the Dutch during the first Anglo-Dutch War and Virginia settlers moved into the Abemarle Sound area.

In 1677, Massachusetts boughr Sir Ferdinando Gorges interests in Main from his heirs and retained Maine until 1820. On February 6 of that year Michel married Margaretha Emmerich and they became the parents of 9 children.

It was during the year 1735, that Michel died that freedom of the press was established during the trial of John Peter Zenger. He was accused and acquited of libel in his newspaper. The French also settled Vincennes, Indiana during that year, and rubber was discovered in South America by Charles Marie de la Condamine.

This Johann Jacob Bender, who is the father of John Leonhardt Bender, also immigrated to America in 1752. We are not sure that he ever arrived in America; but, we did find evidence of a Johann Jacob Bender in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The will of Laurence Simon of Heidelberg Township, North Hampton County Pennsylvania dated January 2, 1757, was probated June 5, 1758. It was witnessed by a Jacob Bender. See the Northamption County Will Abstract #27, GSP.

The year 1693, that Johann Jacob Bender was born was also the year that the French defeated William III during the Battle of Neerwinden, and went on to sack Heidelberg (Eschelbach's neighbor) for the second time. Two years earlier in 1691, the armies of Emperor Leopold conquered Transylvania. Also during 1693 the colony of Maryland was founded in the new world honoring England's new rulers.

Obituaries

Smith, David A., Died Nov. 28, 1893, aged 56 years and 3 months.

Bro. Smith was born in Paducah, Ky., August 28, 1837; moved to Texas in 1858, where he resided till 1871; with the exception of four years, which time he spent in the war. Bro Smith professed faith in Christ and joined the Missionary Baptist church in 1865, and was married to Sarah C. Panther of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Sept. 6, 1866; moved to Arkansas in 1871 where he made his permanent home till death. Bro. Smith was a member of the Malvern Baptist church, was clerk of the church several years and was a faithful member, loved by all the brethren. We cannot bring him back, but we can go to him. The loss of the church is their brothers gain; he is with Christ. Bro. Smith leaves a wife and eight children to mourn for him. He was a loving husband and kind father; But he is gone; may God's blessing ever rest on the bereaved family. Let us weep with those that weep. Farewell my brother, we will all meet again, hand to hand, firmly linked at last and heart to heart enfolded, we will smile up on the troubled past and wonder why we wept at all.

J. M. Clem, Com.
