Page 76 of the same book: "At Logan's Gap, about nine miles southwest of Comanche on the Browawood highway, there is a rock garden consisting of specimens of stones and fossils which attract many tourists."

Logan's headstone is broken and laying on the ground - there is an error on it, as she is shown as the "wife of

Thomas E. Logan". Also buried nearby is an infant son born to Jesse B. & Ella Hall, who died at 8mos of age. Margaret Waring, Librarian for Comanche County Librarian, and local historian had lunch with us and took us by the library (closed for Columbus Day). We looked at copies of original land patents in Comanche County and found that Thomas M. Logan Abstract 613 (at the location of Logan's Gap, named for him) and also Abstract 624 (as T. M. Logan) near Board Church, where he is shown on at least one of the censuses of the time. Since theses abstracts were generally homesteads, Ms. Waring is going to research how he came about having two. They are on opposite directions from the City of Comanche. Ernie & I also went out to Logan's Gap. It is now the site of Prater Heavy Equipment Contractors (a caliche pit). We climbed the hill overlooking the gap - It is beautiflil lan~ No doubt it was in the 1850's when they settled there. We gathered some interesting stones from the area. It is really easy to feel a kinship to the land. In recent years we were told the old "Logan School" was torn down. We could not find the spot. We'll have to save that for another trip.

History of Bienville Parish, State of Louisiana, Fryeburg, page 60:

"The first settlers in the area were James Henderson who came in 1837, Thomas Logan in 1845, and Uriah Jones, W. D. Allums, Rufus Lawhorn, James Walden and Hillary Logan bought land in 1847-1850."

{Same book, pg. 93, "Mount Lebanon":

Martin Canfield of SC, set out on horseback from the Edgefield District of that state, to visit a brother who had moved westward and settled in the state of Mississippi. This was in the spring of 1835. Before leaving home, Mr. Canfield had been asked by a group of his relatives and friends to find a suitable site where they might acquire land to cultivate and raise cotton. On his trip, which carried him all the way to Red River, Martin Canfield decided on the present site of Mount Lebanon, LA At that time Bienville Parish was still part of Claiborne Parish and was officially open for settlement ... According to old records, seven families came in the first wagon train. Soon about 40 families in all, some from Edgefield, SC and a few from Al and GA made the trek westward. Other than the above named Reuben Drake and Martin Canfield, the wagon trains consisted of the following: Tandy and James Key, J.D. and J.M. Canfield, Matthias Ardis, Covington Hardy, the Bakers, Ezekial Protho, William Logan, Cattlet C. & Charles A Thurmond, several Burnett's namely Jeremiah, R.H., W.D. and L.E.; Triplett Cason, Elizabeth Welbourne, Hillery and William Logan,...

Note: Thomas Logan would have been just 14 yrs old when this move began. Hillary was his brother and William his father.

-----------------

1840 Claiborne Parish, LA lists Thomas Logan as Head of Household w/2 Slaves, one male aged 15-20, one male aged 20-30. Thomas would he the 20-30 year old male, as he was about 29 years old at the time.

HER OBITUARY (CUT OUT OF PAPER WITH NO DATE OR NAME OF NEWSPAPER SHOWING):

"Mrs. Mary E. Logan, mother of Mrs. J. B. Hall of this city and with whom she lived, died at 8 o'clock Monday morning. She had outlived the great majority of her generation, she was nearing the 92d anniversary of her birth. For several weeks past it was observed that the sun of her long life was receding behind the western horizon and that death was soon to assert its dominion.

The family moved to Whitewright from Celeste about a year ago, and owing to her comparatively brief residence in the city Mrs. Logan did not have opportunity to form many acquaintances, but the fact that she has been guided safely through the vicissitudes of ninety-two years implies a live of moderation, of even temper, of kind impulses, and of due observance of the laws of nature and the commandments of God. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Epting and Rev. Truett, and Tuesday afternoon the body was placed aboard a Katy train for Comanche, Texas for interment beside relatives and friends of former years."

Another newspaper article - also undated and without name of newspaper:

"Mrs. F. A McDowell, who resided with her sister, Mrs. J. B. Hall at the Grayson College dormitory, died Tuesday night. She was 61 years of age. The funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon, at the home, conducted by Rev. A E. Major and Rev. W. J. Epting, following which the remains were laid to rest at Oak Hill cemetery.

Mrs. McDowell had been an invalid for some time, and on her recent trip to Comanche to attend the funeral of her mother, Mrs. Logan, she became quite seriously ill. Later, however, she was able to return to Whitewright, but her condition grew rapidly worse. The people of Whitewright exiend their sympathy and condolence to Dr. and Mrs. Hall in the double sorrow that has come to their home."
