Notes for WILLIAM BUNNELL:

Came to America about 1630

The name Bonnell was formerly spelled "Buenells". It is a French name. They were driven out of France on account of their religious beliefs. Hugenots of France. In the 13th century 8,000 Frenchmen listed in Sicily to the ringing for vespers, not knowing it was the signal for their massacre.

The following was compiled by William R. Austin, March 5, 1999

WILLIAM BUNNELL

(Note that three numbers are used to identify each subject individual. The first is a number I have assigned to reflect both the generation number and the placement in each family. The second is the number assigned by Ruth C. Duncan, for the benefit of those of you who have use her book, WILLIAM BUNNELL AND HIS DESCENDANTS. The third is the number assigned in Claude Bunnell's massive database.)

WILLIAM BUNNELL was certainly born in England, although no evidence showing the date or place of his birth has been found. From circumstantial evidence, I have concluded that he was born "about l600." See Newsletter Vol I, No. 1, page 3 (N-I-l-3) for a discussion of the evidence. The second issue of the Newsletter, beginning on page 2, contains every reference to William Bunnell, made during his lifetime, which has come to light so far. From them we glean the following brief account of his life.

He appears first in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, where he was selected on 28 September 1630 to be a juror in an inquiry concerning the death of one Austen Bratcher. Therefore, we can suppose that he was one of the settlers who arrived in New England in the great Winthrop fleet of 1630. (Charles Edward Banks, in his book THE WINTHROP FLEET OF 1630, identified this juror with the William Burnell who died at Boston in 1660/1. However, the name is clearly Bunnell in the record, and there seems to be no reason to assume it was spelled wrong.)

William Bunnell does not appear in the records again for the next ten years. In the meantime he married ANN WILMOT, daughter of Benjamin and Ann Wilmot. Presumably they were married at Massachusetts Bay, although I have found no record of the Wilmot family in Massachusetts. Benjamin Wilmot was one of the early settlers of New Haven Colony, where he signed the covenant some time after June 1639. No earlier record of him has turned up anywhere in the colonies, but it can be shown that most, if not all, the early settlers of New Haven first came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, where they lived anywhere from nine months to ten years before moving to New Haven in 1638-43. I will assume that the Wilmots followed this pattern unless conflicting evidence can be found.

The first three children of William and Ann Bunnell must have been born at Massachusetts Bay. The order of birth given below is the traditional one, followed by Donald Lines Jacobus in FAMILIES OF ANCIENT NEW HAVEN, although no record seems to exist which mentions the age at any time of any of the three.

In 1640 we find the first of the numerous records of the public assistance provided to William Bunnell and his family, when the General Court of the Colony requested the town of Watertown to provide William Bunnell with a lot, which the Colony would pay for if William could not (N-I-2-2). If the lot was actually provided, no record of it has been

found.

In 1645 the General Court appointed a committee with power to dispose of the children of Goodman Bunnell, "if their grandfather will not take care of them" (The grandfather1 Benjamin Wilmot, had moved to New Haven Colony several years before.) On the same day the Court provided that certain goods be delivered to the same committee "to be disposed of to Goodman Bunnell & his use." Six months later, in May 1646, William Bunnell returned to England, and the Court agreed to pay for 30 shillings worth of clothing for him when he arrived there. (N-I-2-2,3)

There is nothing to show why William went back to England or where in England he went, but he seems to have simply abandoned his family. In a court action in New Haven several years later his wife testified that '1he left little or nothing to maintain them, and she asked him what she should do with them; he said they were hers as well as his, and he left them with her." One of the sons, presumably Benjamin, testified that "he remembers his father did say so to his mother." (N-I-2-5). With no alternative, Ann Bunnell took the three children and moved to New Haven to live with her parents. Her father could not support such a large addition to his family, and they decided "to put forth the children." Nicholas Elsy took one of the boys, presumably the elder (Benjamin, in the traditional order), and Samuel Whitehead took Lydia.

By the middle of 1649, or earlier, William Bunnell returned from England and followed his family to New Haven. On 3 April 1650 he makes his first appearance in the New Haven records, when "The Court freed old Goodman Bunill from paying his poll money to the town, because of his poverty, age and weakness." This is the only reference to William's age in any record. I find it difficult to believe that he was less than 50 years old at the time this statement was made (See

N-I-1-3)

On 4 May 1650 Ann Bunnell gave birth to another daughter, Mary, and in August of that year William was fined 5 shillings for failure to report the birth within three months. A few months later he was in trouble again. On 7 January 1650/51 John Tompson sought the help of the Court to make William Bunnell move out of Tompson's house. Tompson said he was willing to give him a year's rent if he would move peaceably out. This probably means that the Bunnells were at least a year behind in their rent payments, which Tompson would forgive if they would simply vacate. The Court ordered William to move, and gave him two or three weeks to do so. A month later John Tompson was back in Court again asking that William Bunnell be put out of his house. This time Stephen Goodyear undertook to guarantee the move if Tompson would let the Bunnells stay for another week. John Tompson expressed himself satisfied with that arrangement, and apparently it was successful, since the issue did not come before the Court again. (N-I-2-4).

In October 1651 it was William's turn to sue, when he asked the Court to revoke the apprentice agreements Ann and her father had made with Nicholas Elsy and Samuel Whitehead. The Court refused to do so. (N-I-2-5)

During the next six or eight months the Town authorities had to "consider of the charge which old Bunill hath been to the Town, and how it mi~ht be lessened." The first step was to give him an allowance of two shillings a week, "provided that he and his family do what they can towards their maintenance." Then they took up the problem of the son who was still at home (presumably Nathaniel). The Townsmen felt that the boy should be put out to apprenticeship, both to reduce the charge to the Town, and for the good of the boy, "who now for want of due nurture grows rude and offensive." William Judson offered the Bunnells a cow if he could take the boy for "such a number of years as might answer it." When William Bunnell refused to accept this arrangement, the Townsmen retaliated by withdrawing the weekly allowance. (N-I-2-6)

On 28 August 1653 another son, Ebenezer, was born to the Bunnells. He seems to have died very soon. The following February it was reported that Ann Bunnell was sick, and the authorities were still concerned about how much public support was proper and how to make sure that the two remaining children (Nathaniel and Mary) were put out "both for the good of the children (who are not educated as they should) & for the easing the Town of charge." (N-I-2-6, 7).

Ann Bunnell died soon after1 and on the first of May 1654 William told the Town he wanted to go to old England where "he hath some friends to take care of him." The Townsmen and Treasurer were authorized to negotiate his passage on a ship bound from Milford to Newfoundland (and presumably from there to old England). Their conclusion was that this "might free the Town from some charge, though they made some present disbursement for his passage and other necessaries for him." (N-I-2-7)

That is William Bunnell's last appearance in the records of New Haven. We can assume that he boarded the ship and returned to England. He left his four children in New Haven. No record exists to show whether the two younger children were "put out"1 or if so to whom. Perhaps their grandparents or their maternal uncles assumed responsibility for them. Benjamin Wilmot, in his will dated 7 August 1669, left 20 shillings to each of his Bunnell grandchildren (N- I-2-7).

William Bunnell probably died in England if he ever arrived there. It is sometimes asserted that he died on the island of Barbados in the West Indies, since a man of that name was buried in the parish of St. Michaels, Barbados, 5 August 1678. This seems very unlikely, since William would have been around 80 years old and would have made at least five crossings of the Atlantic Ocean.

Generation No. 4

4. NATHANIEL4 BONNELL (WILLIAM3 BUNNELL, BENJAMIN2, THOMAS1) was born 1648 in Massachusetts Bay Colony, and died 1696 in Elizabethtown, NJ. He married SUSANNAH WHITEHEAD January 03, 1665/66 in By Mr. Williams Jones at New Haven, CT, daughter of ISAAC WHITEHEAD. She was born August 05, 1650 in New Haven, CT, and died February 12, 1733/34 in Springfield, NJ.

Notes for NATHANIEL BONNELL:

NATHANIEL BUNNELL or BONNELL (William) was probably born in one of the towns of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. At the time of the move to New Haven, CT, in 1646, Ann (Wilmot) Bunnell had 'divers small children." Benjamin and Lydia were apparently the two who were put out to other families. The births of Mary and Ebenezer were recorded in New Haven in 1650 and 1653 respectively. Nathaniel was therefore probably the youngest of three brought from Massachusetts Bay. He was probably born between 1640 and 1642.

In 1652 and 1653 there was considerable agitation in New Haven for this boy to be put out as an apprentice. The town was paying for the family's upkeep and resented paying for a hungry child when alternatives were available. One of the neighbors had offered a cow for the boy, but the Bunnells had refused. It was asserted that the boy was becoming wild through lack of management and training. After his mother died and his father went back to England, Nathaniel may well have been apprenticed. If so, however, no evidence has been found of

it.

The events of his youth went unrecorded. We next see him on his wedding day, 3 January 1665/6, when he was married by Mr. William Jones at New Haven to SUSANNAH WHITEHEAD, daughter of Isaac and Mary Whitehead. She was born at New Haven 5 August 1650. Almost immediately after their wedding, Nathaniel and Susannah, with her father and his family, joined the party about to settle Elizabethtown, NJ. Both Nathaniel Bunnell and Isaac Whitehead are listed among the 65 persons who took the oath of allegiance at Elizabethtown 19 February

1665/6.

In Elizabethtown Nathaniel had a house lot of six acres, 15 chains by 4 chains, bounded east by Thomas Price, west and north by his father-in-law Isaac Whitehead1 Sr., and south by the highway. He also had an allotment of 120 acres, "Lying upon the south branch of Elizabethtown Creek and by ye plaine which said above creek passeth through," and 12 acres of meadow "lying in the Great meadows upon John Woodruff's Creek." On 11 March 1669 he was No. 90 in the list of one hundred and seventy freeholders at Elizabeth who drew a first lot right of one hundred acres. He had 180 acres surveyed to him on 10 April 1676, and his lands bounded on lands of Matthias Hatfield.. Joseph Osborne and Isaac Whitehead. His house on East Jersey Street, mentioned in a 1682 deed, is now the oldest existing residence in Elizabeth, NJ. He sold some land in Elizabethtown to Benjamin Price on 15 June 1677.

In addition to being a large landowner, Nathaniel became prominent in community affairs. He served on a jury, 6 May 1671, by order of Gov. Carteret, for the trial of William Hackett, captain of the sloop "Indeavor," of Massachusetts, for illegal trading in the Province. "Nathaniel Bunnel1' was one of the executors of his father-in-law's estate under the terms of Isaac Whiteheadts will, which was dated 31 January 1690/1 and proved 26 February 1690/1. In 1692 he was a member of the General Assembly from Elizabethtown.

In 1694 "Nathaniel Bunnelltl was among the 124 members of the FirstPresbyterian Church of Elizabethtown who subscribed to the support ofRev. John Harriman, his contribution being Li 10 5. His son "Nathanie

Bunnell, Jr.," was also one of the subscribers, and his son Isaac subscribed a few years later.

He1 like many others, was opposed to "constituting courts," etc., whereby their land titles were liable to be dispossessed. He was one of the petitioners to the Crown for relief from this oppression by the Lords Proprietors. This seems to be the last public mention of his name. He probably died not long afterward, perhaps about 1696, without leaving a will.

His widow outlived him for many years. She moved out to Connecticut Farms (now Union, NJ) where her son Joseph was living. Her gravestone in the Presbyterian churchyard at Connecticut Farms read:

"Here lies the body of Susannah, wife of Nathaniel Bonnel, Dec'd February ye 12th 1733-4 in ye 84th year of her age."

He married JOANNA (HANNAH) MILLER Abt. 1720, daughter of SAMUEL MILLER and ELIZABETH RIGGS. She was born Abt. 1702 in Westfield, NJ, and died February 01, 1793.

Notes for NATHANIEL BONNELL:

NATHANIEL BONNELL (Nathaniel, Nathaniel, William) was born in 1696 at Elizabeth, NJ. He married JOANNA MILLER, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Riggs) Miller of Westfield, NJ. (Several references indicated that her mother was Elizabeth Thompson instead of Elizabeth Riggs, but I have accepted the authority of "The New Jersey Genesis," July 1961, and a letter from Mrs. Helen P. Alleman dated 2 May 1963.) Joanna was born about 1702 at Westfield, NJ.

Nathaniel and Joanna spent the first twelve or fifteen years of their life together in Elizabeth. Their daughter Jane! who died when almost ten years old, was buried in the cemetery of the Presbyterian Church there. In 1736 Nathaniel, with his mother Mary, acted as administrator of his father's estate. Nathaniel was named in the Elizabethtown charter, 1740, as a member of the Common Council. He was a freeholder of the Borough of Elizabethtown in 1755. In some of the records he is called Capt., a military title which he probably earned in the militia.

Nathaniel and his family removed to Turkey (now New Providence), NJ. Possibly this was "my land above the mountains west from Elizabethtown," which he inherited under the terms of his father's will. Nathaniel was a wheelwright. He bought land along the Passaic River in Chatham, NJ. The area was then called "Bonnelltown." His house, still (1988) standing, is used for an antique shop.

Nathaniel Bonnell died 18 November 1763 at Madison, NJ, and was buried in the Bottle Hill Presbyterian Cemetery there. His widow married (second) Deacon Timothy Whitehead. She died 1 February 1793 and was buried in the Bottle Hill Presbyterian cemetery at Madison, NJ.

JOHN7 BONNELL (NATHANIEL6, NATHANIEL5, NATHANIEL4, WILLIAM3 BUNNELL, BENJAMIN2, THOMAS1) was born September 26, 1737 in Elizabeth, Essex Co., now Union Co., NJ, and died December 15, 1817 in Springfield, Essex (now Union Co.),NJ, Aged 80 yrs, 2 mo & 19 days.. He married SARAH CARTER 1756 in Chatham, daughter of BENJAMIN CARTER. She was born Abt. 1737 in Chatham NJ, and died September 02, 1824 in Turkey, Essex co (now New Providence, Union Co.) NJ, aged 87 yrs..

Notes for JOHN BONNELL:

JOHN BONNELL, son of Nathaniel, was born 26 September 1737 at Elizabeth, Essex co, now Union co, NJ (or New Providence, Essex co, NJ). He married SARAH CARTER in 1756. She was born about 1737, daughter of Benjamin Carter. In the early 1740's James Carter and Benjamin Carter, Sarah's father, purchased large tracts of land from the proprietors on the east side of the Passaic opposite Chatham with the result that the Carters owned practically the entire valley in which is now the city of Summit, from Morris Avenue to the Morris Turnpike. All the Carter land acquired about 1740 subsequently came to be owned by John Bonnel. John and Sarah lived in the Carter homestead on River Road. During the Revolution John served as a private in the New Jersey Line. One source refers to him as a captain of militia. He was a prominent and well-to-do farmer and businessman, owner of a sawmill and a one-third interest in a grist mill. He also had a forge on his property. He died 15 December 1817 at his home in Springfield, Essex (now Union) co, NJ, just across the Passaic River from Chatham in Morris co. He was the last survivor of the Revolutionary veterans from the Chatham area. His widow died 2 September 1824 at Turkey, Essex co (now New Providence, Union co), NJ. They were buried in the graveyard in Madison, Morris co, NJ. John's will, dated 7 September 1811, was probated 3 January 1818. It is lengthy, but it reveals much about his manner of life. Two copies of the will are in my files, one printed in AMERICAN FAMILIES OF HISTORIC LINEAGE -LONG ISLAND, and another printed in DAY UNTO DAY. The two versions vary somewhat. I use the former copy for the following, with variants from the latter enclosed in brackets only when the differences are significant.

He was born May 22, 1878 in Reading, Michigan, and died March 02, 1946 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas.

Notes for MOSES GRAY CARREL:

The following poem was written by Sarah Hadden Sanborn, sometime before her death January 25th, 1914. And was given to Grover Carrel Smith by Timothy P. Hadden

Cousin Mosses G. Carrel is the name,

It's myself that's descended from one of the same.

Although very busy, 'tis true,

Since receiving your letter, I've oft thought of you.

I'm sure I never saw you or know how you look,

Yet I'm writing up history to put in your book.

If the numerous families to which we belong,

With their virtues not sung in prose or in song.

It has ever been my delight,

To know there are some of them not out of sight.

From Scotland and far northern Ireland,

Londonderry, I'm told,

Come Margaret so bonnie,

And Daniel so bold.

They joined the friends, (sic)

United their fortunes and came over the sea,

To make them a home in the land of the free.

The oatmeal and porridge was quite to their mind,

But the "pig in the parlor" they left far behind.

And so, my dear cousin,

If you're wanting a crest,

Twine shamrock and thistle 'round the eagle's nest.

This following is the log of a trip up the Hudson River on the "Helen W." a motor boat owner by M. Gray Carrel. He had bought the boat so the family could escape the New York City's influenza epidemic of 1916.

The family consisted of:

Moses Gray Carrel, Father, age 38, "Captain"

Ester Pearl Bonnell, Mother, age 39, "Mate"

Morton Gray Carrel, Son, age 15, "Commodore"

Sarah Elizabeth Carrel, Daughter, age 11, ""

Elizabeth Williams Carrel, Daughter, age 3, "Bee""Pride"

He wrote as follows:

July 30, 1916

10:15 a.m. "The Merry Five" left their luxurious Apartment at 1439 Uni Ave. and with much bedding, and grub and clad in oldest clothes available, sat forth in the Helen W. a 25 ft. Motor boat which had been purchased for the occasion, some few weeks before, and started on their vacation trip. The idea was to go up the Hudson as far as the spirit moved them and there camp till they wished to go farther. The tide being in their favor i.e. flowing in, their progress was a little faster than usual and Nyack, (NY), 22 miles away, was reached at lunch time. There they anchored and ate their lunch in the boat. Then Bee took her nap and the whole bunch lounged about and rested till she wakened. The second lap carried them to within two miles of West Point where after several trials a seemingly good place to anchor was found. After a hasty supper in the boat, beds were made up and all turned in.

The officers of the boat spent a some what anxious night, listing to the swells dash on the rocks near by, while the rest of the bunch slept peacefully, rocked to sleep by the same swells.

At 4 a.m. the Captain and Mate were wakened rather rudely by a sudden jar & grind which proved to be an ugly rock under the port bow, reached by the anchor having dragged. The Commodore was called and he and the Captain kept the boat off as best as could with boat hooks. By the time the danger was past the awkward squad was awake and as dawn was breaking in the east, She insisted upon getting out and as it was almost 4:30 a.m. the crew turned out, made things safe for the day, and started breakfast on the rocks. Then the Mate was called and the pride of the bunch wakened and all ate heartily of bacon, fried spuds, coffee and bread & butter.

After a survey of the surrounding coast the officers left and started for gas, food and to reconnoiter for a safer and saner place to anchor. While they were gone the women in the bunch did up the dishes and gathered huckleberries for lunch. They also gave the "pride" a bath and combed out their own tresses. After weary waiting for several hours the Helen W was seen bearing down upon the camp with leaps and bounds. But the Capt. held her steady and the camp was made in order and despatch. All were ordered aboard, after a good meal was prepared and eaten, and the new camping place being the goal, a fresh start was made.

Cold Spring, a large town of about 159 inhabitants, was visited and supplies were purchased. Water was obtained from a wonderful cold spring accross the river on the reservation of the Military school, West Point The main buildings and surrounding officer's quarters were passed and admired on the way up. Being situated upon a point of land at a curve in the river, they are visible for several miles. From the before mentioned "spring" the main Chapel was visible and with it's setting of green trees it was certainly a picture long to be remembered.

Monday the 31st was spent at Cold Spring in a cove where a sand bar extending many yards out into the water, made an elegant beach. The whole bunch spent the afternoon in the water which was very warm, as was the wind, so that the bathing was delightful. Then the tide being so low it seemed wise to weigh anchor and get to deeper water. After some trouble getting off the sand bar the Helen W was once more afloat and going.

Supper was prepared accross the river at the "spring" and then after crossing back to the town of Cold Spring the boat was tied to a pier and night preparations were made. Two young fellows also tied to our pier and proved pleasant companions. They told of a place called Croton Bay, down the river a ways, where there was a fine harbor.

Tuesday, Aug. 1, (1916)

Tuesday was spent much the same way as Monday, bathing eating and resting and the night was spent at the same place.

Wed. Aug 2

Up bright & early, & well rested after a good sleep. We went accross the river to the spring where breakfast was prepared and mother did quite a washing. Then the Helen W. was started down the river and about 2 p.m. was anchored in Croton Bay which proved to be an ideally quite clean spot among the hills with a nice beach. Here we stayed, getting our meals on the beach. The Capt built a grand fire place with bricks and upon this meat, spuds and onions were cooked into a dandy stew. The town was visited by the Com. And bread butter eggs and such were bot for the larder.. When bunks were made at night all turned in declaring it to be the best day ever and wishing to spend the rest of the vacation right there.

Thursday, Aug 3

The day broke clear and fine. All on board the Helen W. had slept the sleep of the just and awakened refreshed and ready to eat the pancakes eggs & coffee which the Capt prepared. The day was once more spent on the beach & in the water bathing and along towards noon some other navigators made themselves acquainted with us and proved to be very pleasant people. They were Mr & Mrs Barrett of N.Y. Together with them the afternoon was spent on the beach and in the water but the wind was quite cool so the bathing was not enjoyed as much as it might have been. In the late afternoon the Capt and Mate walked to town and bot supplies. After supper all went to bed feeling that the day had been well spent.

Friday Aug 5

The night was a close sultry one and misquitoes were bad all night. The sky is over cast and looks like rain. Mr & Mrs Barrett have gone to town in the Edyl with the Capt, Com, and the awkward squad leaving the Mate and the Pride to watch supplies & the boat. The Mate spent such s poor night that she voted to go home, but the vote was black balled and so it looks as if there were to be several more days spent in this pleasant spot. Let us hope the Mate sleeps better tonight or she may lose her angelic disposition.

Sat Aug 6

Well, luck was agin the Mate last night and instead of sleeping better, she dident sleep at all and neither did the Capt. The rest of the crew slept a little but mighty little for the pesky misquitoes heard we were in town and decided they needed a good square meal. So after sending out a call for all troops, they descended upon the Merry five and attack them en mass. They got their square meal all right but O, the way the poor victims did suffer and the length and horror of the night of Aug 5th 1916 will long be remembered by the "Merry Five". However all things have an end and finally morn broke and at 4:30 the Capt got up and so did every one else, and after eating a rather uncomfy breakfast between slaps at the hoard of misquitoes that refused to depart, the bunch took a vote to go home and get a rest, a bath and some clean cloths. Soafter breakfast we put putted accross the bay to the P.O. got our mail, 8 letters, and then started for home. O, did the word ever mean so much!

But something seemed wrong about the engine. It didnt run as smooth as usual and all the way home it rumbled and grumbled so that when the "White House" was reached every-one heaved a sizle of relief. At last the top Apt at 1439 Uni Ave was reached and the end of the Week's vacation had come. Ever one had a good bath, put on clean duds and after a good hearty meal all turned in and went to sleep.

Aug 7

Not an eye opened till most 9 a.m. after over 12 hours of sleep. After a good large breakfast the Capt & Com went down to the boat to see what was wrong with the engine. There they worked till after 4 p.m. when they came home for dinner
